a fresh spin on penny black’s tradition and heritage

the brief

Penny Black has been a staple pub in Brunswick for over a century,
but as the years past, their customer base evolved to a mix of families and a younger crowd, they required a website that was more accessible, attractive and had an easier path to book tables and gigs.

the results

We landed on a bright and grungy design solution, positioning Penny Black as a cool, trendy pub whilst taking a nod to their history as an old post office. A mix of grunge, along with a website designed to optimise the users experience an create easy discovery and navigation through their up and coming gigs and events. The refresh saw 50% increase in website traffic in the first 6 months.

website

more than a pub

The Penny Black does more than just beers and pub grub, they are a venue for gigs, functions and events. It was important to highlight the hip and vibrant culture through this website refresh. Neon green and bright pink push a cool and fresh new look for this local pub.

a nod to penny's heritage

In our research, we discovered that the Penny Black building was originally a post office. In the edgier, and punchy visual identity we generated, we took inspiration from their post office heritage with a fun postman mascot. Adding a playful element that embodied Penny’s past, present and future.
